The Truth About Hair Growth

Who doesn’t want that thick, shiny, healthy hair that we’ve all been dreaming about? Let’s face it; we’ve spent hundreds of dollars on expensive shampoos, conditioners, and hair treatments which have done little to nothing to help achieve that delightful hair we’re after. The truth is, we need to know the foods and vitamins that our hair needs.

There are four stages to hair growth, these are:

  1. Anagen (The Growing Phase)
  2. Catagen (The Transition Phase)
  3. Telogen (The Resting Phase)
  4. Exogen (The Shedding Phase)

The Anagen Phase

This is the longest stage of hair growth, lasting 3-5 years (the hair on your head).

The Catagen Phase

This phase starts when the previous one ends, and lasts for approximately 10 days.

The Telogen Phase

This phase starts at the end of the previous. It usually lasts around 3 months.

The Exogen Phase

During this phase hair is normally shed from the scalp, you normally lose 50-100 hairs per day during this phase, which is totally normal. This phase ranges from 2-5 months.

Good Nutrition & Hair Growth

Since hair's majority is protein, you should keep that intake up by focusing on healthy proteins, such as:

  • Lean Meats
  • Fish
  • Beans
  • Legumes
  • Low-fat dairy products

In 2019 a study in 'Dermatology and Therapy' also recognized that sufficient intake of the proceeding nutrients was associated with healthy hair growth:
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin C
  • Iron (especially in women)
In some cases, Zinc, folic acid, and vitamin B12 might help in promoting healthy hair growth.
